The Thrive at 5 Series #3

by Renee Rood

I have been creating art since I was very small. Using things around me, in my house and on the beach near my home to create art I was truly proud of. Being at the beach really inspired my art and expanded my vision. It also developed my resourcefulness. I created the series Thrive at 5 for everyone who wants to gain more confidence in their creativity and be inspired, like I was, to expand their style into the next level.

Getting into the zone may seem hard or even impossible to achieve. Every artist yearns to create from this place of ultimate focus and flow. There is nothing like it, I agree. I have tried many things and many ways to get into the zone and the following methods have really served me well. I hope they bless you.

Method #1

Clear your mind of all distractions and forget you are trying to get into the zone. What is inside of you will appear…in time. Say a simple prayer of gratitude to center yourself and expect good things to happen. This helps to enter a relaxed free state of focused creation. Don’t let the thought of ugly art even enter your mind. We have all made ugly art and many times there is someone out there that will love that very piece – and purchase it. Art is an expression of the beauty within.

Method #2

Practice your skills over and over until you reach a level of expertise that you are proud of. The joy of process – it’s like activating the subconscious part of your brain. When you go again into your designated area to create, you will be able to achieve flow a bit easier. Build on your skills for next time and challenge yourself just a bit more. Expertise and reward seem to go hand in hand in achieving flow.

Method #3

Don’t allow yourself to compare yourself or your art to anyone else. It will be easier to get into the zone if you believe in yourself. Making art can actually nourish you. I read an article by a neuroscientist that said it is the physical act of making art that induces feelings of stress relief and positivity.

Method #4

Use that new brush, pen or pallet knife you have found - make it a special time like you would if you made a special dinner for friends or family. A new tool can bring on excitement to delve into the possibilities of this new thing. Start creating and don’t stop for a long time just keep going and moving about. Free flowing and joyful, unworried motion.

Method #5

Sometimes deep breathing can help clear your mind and place you in the zone. Pull out a clean sheet of paper or canvas and visualize what you want to create - then create the first layer of what you imagined. Continue to take breaths even during your process of creating. This will reset your brain and bring a calm clarity where creativity can flourish.

Getting in the zone for me is like prayer. A peaceful place out of which comes the most unexpected results. Remember, people need your art especially right now. Keep pressing in and pressing on. I hope these 5 methods are helpful in your creative journey as they are to me. Now let's see what you can create. Check out my Facebook/Instagram page "Renee Rood Art".
