5 Ways to Stay Motivated When You Create

Staying motivated when you create is a struggle for every kind of artist. Everyone gets stuck from time to time. Don't let yourself quit creating. Keep moving, doing, seeking inspiration and you will unlock your creative potential.

Here are some tips that helped me:

1. Put on music while you create. I play worship music and sometimes violin music as I work. For me, I cannot play the type of music that could start a dance party because it tends to distract me from my process….I would dance right out of the room…LOL. Some people love the dance though. Experiment with different types of music you might not have tried before – that’s how I found violin music. It really sparks a new type of creativity in me.

2. Sit near a window with a pleasant view for a few moments – go to an area to be in nature. I have a cute little outside porch with a hummingbird feeder and tall trees that sway in the wind. It helps me settle down and clear my mind to create. I even go to a YouTube video of the walk around Oahu beach to settle down my restless self when winter time prevents me from basking on the back porch for too long.

3. Hold one of your favorite pieces of art (one of yours or someone else’s) and take a moment to really see it – you may see things you never saw before. Things that will inspire you to elaborate on what you see this time or tweak it a bit as well in your next piece. It is pure joy to love your own art and then be challenged enough to let it go to its new home.

4. Read your “reason statement” before you begin to remind yourself who you are and why you do what you do – or create one. Some people call this “Your Why”. This one took me a very long time so I will not go into all that here (a topic for another day). Having a reason why I create was a very important part of motivation for me. Making a living for my family was what I needed at this time but that was not as strong as my why. Being a part of something bigger than myself was more of a motivator for me. Take the time to find your why.

5. Take a moment to explore what you truly love. Spend a bit of time writing down who you are. This deep exercise was so beneficial for me, as an artist, that it became a truly priceless endeavor. My search started with a spiritual journey through the Bible. Locating words that stated who God said I was as His creation and His daughter. You see, I needed something more concrete in my life than what I already knew about myself . If you take the time to go deeper, your art will be truly authentic and a unique expression of your own heart.

Art is the proper task of life. The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude. - Friedrich Nietzsche (philosopher, poet, composer)

Creating Art with Confidence

These 5 tips opened up a new dimension for me and my art. I used them in times when I felt stuck or unsure if what I was doing really mattered. I hope this blesses you today and was useful in your journey.
